One scrapbook containing correspondence, clippings, photographs, announcements, and stock certificates related to the brokerage firm Russell, Brewster & Company. The scrapbook covers the entire history of the firm from its incorporation as Wrenn & Brewster in 1872 by John H. Wrenn and Edward L. Brewster (1848-1911) to the succession of Brewster & Reed in 1876 by Edward L. Brewster and Albert C. Reed. In 1883 the firm became known as Edward L. Brewster & Co. and in 1904 Russell Brewster & Co., a limited partnership, until the death of Edward L. Brewster in 1911 when the firm was Russell, Brewster & Co., a general partnership until its dissolution in June of 1938. The scrapbook details the ups and downs of the business of the firm over its 66 years of operation, including a fire in 1885 that destroyed their offices, blueprints for their new offices at 137 Adams Street, which were designed in 1900. Walter S. Brewster was president of the Chicago Stock Exchange. The scrapbook contains varying amounts of information regarding the partners: John H. Wrenn, Edward L. Brewster, Albert C. Reed, Charles C. Yoe, Daniel Ullman, Edward P. Russell, Walter S. Brewster, Cordova L. Peniston, Robert J. Fischer, and William W. Sutherland.
